Protection from infection by viruses can be dramatically improved by a combination of good hygiene and, in the case of airborne viruses such as Influenza, by wearing a protective mask.
Selecting the correct protective mask is important and sometimes the differences are not well understood.
• Full Face Respirators with appropriate filters give good protection however are expensive, rather uncomfortable and impractical for most day-to-day uses. Use of this type of mask is generally confined to military and law-enforcement operations.
• ‘Surgical’ masks are better than nothing and provide some limited protection against direct airborne droplets. Deficiencies lie in the high proportion of unfiltered air passing around the mask edges and reduced filtration effect once the fabric is saturated by moisture from the wearer’s breath. Once contaminated they are also themselves a potential source of further contamination.
• Particulate Respirators, such as products carrying the the N95 or P2 rating, provide much better protection to the wearer than surgical masks but can become uncomfortable after even a relatively short period and, like surgical masks, once contaminated are themselves a potential source of further contamination. Viruses can remain viable for long periods on such masks and simple actions such as heavy breathing or coughing can propel those viruses into the breathing space of others.
• Virogard Protective Masks offer a practical and effective alternative form of protection by both limiting the potential intake and actively killing viruses that come in contact with the mask itself. Designed for comfortable wear over long periods they are optimised as a truly practical and effective aid to protecting against airborne viruses.
There are 2 types of Virogard Masks in the range:
• The Virogard Re-Usable Protective Mask lies somewhere between a surgical mask and a particulate respirator but with 2 layers of added antimicrobial action. Its advantages are superior comfort and re-usability (can be washed and reused up to 20 times).
• The Virogard P2 Respirator Mask has the same antimicrobial performance as the Re-Usable mask but additionally meets the higher International Standards for filtration and facial fit. International Standards do not accommodate re-use in fabric respirators and the P2 Respirator can only be regarded as single-use. It is designed for situations of high contagion such as a pandemic outbreak.
Virogard Masks are easy to fit quickly and comfortable to wear. Each individual Virogard Protective Mask comes with clearly illustrated fitting instructions to ensure the maximum effectiveness of the product.
